Dr. Karen Vail, Entomology and Plant Pathology (EPP) Professor, will receive the “Entomological Society of America – Southeastern Branch Distinguished Award in Urban Entomology” at the 2015 Southeastern Branch Meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi this March. This award recognizes and encourages outstanding extension, research and teaching contributions in urban entomology.

Dr. Vail’s contributions are varied as she provides her clientele with the most up to date information about fire ants, termites, bed bugs, lawn and garden IPM, and School IPM. Her research on these topics have led to effective and affordable solutions that help manage pests and reduce risks associated with pests and pesticides. She disseminates this information through various online mediums, face to face communications (speaking to almost 1700 pesticide management professionals each year), and she has published 18 peer-reviewed original research papers, 60 peer-reviewed Extensions publications, four book chapters, and 548 newsletter and trade journal articles.     

Her outstanding effort and dedication to science can be seen as she has been honored with several national awards including PestWise IPM Innovator Award by United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Southern Region IPM Center “Friends of Southern IPM Bright Idea Award”, and she has been honored with a named research fund titled: “Dr. Karen Vail Urban Entomology Research Fund” which was established by the East Tennessee Pesticide Applicators Association to ensure continuation of her research and research-based solution for urban pest management.       

Dr. Parwinder Grewal, EPP Department Head, who nominated Dr. Vail for this outstanding award states that “Dr. Vail is a model extension professional!  She is responsive to the information needs of Extension agents, pesticide application professionals, and of the citizens of Tennessee.” Join us in congratulating Dr. Vail on her outstanding accomplishment!
