The Institute has purchased a site license for the online meeting service known as Zoom. Zoom is a cloud-based platform for video and audio conferencing, mobile collaboration, and simple online meetings. Zoom’s web-based conferencing uses high-quality video and audio and is accessible on Windows and Mac OS X, as well as iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. Additionally, Zoom can be used with the Institute’s existing Polycom video conferencing units. It is even possible to dial into a Zoom meeting via telephone.
Zoom has been used extensively for the last month by a group of early adopters, and ITS is excited to announce that it is now available to everyone at the Institute. All faculty and staff can access their Zoom accounts by visiting Zoom’s homepage at https://utia.zoom.us and clicking the login button in the top right-hand corner of the page. Sign in with your NetID and password and your Zoom account will be ready to use.
Everyone at the Institute will receive a Zoom account capable of hosting an unlimited number of meetings with up to 100 participants. Those participants can include UTIA employees, clients, or stakeholders. Joining a Zoom meeting on your computer or mobile device is as easy as clicking on a URL. Joining a Zoom meeting from a Polycom unit in your departmental conference room is as easy as dialing the telephone. Zoom has already been used to host traditional meetings; to connect classrooms in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson; and to enable remote participation in a thesis defense.
