Council on Food, Agricultural & Resource Economics Taps Muhammad for Expertise
Andrew Muhammad, professor and Blasingame Chair of Excellence at the University of Tennessee Institute of
Agriculture, has been invited to serve on the board of directors for the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, also known as C-FARE.
The council provides information
and expertise to decision makers in Washington and functions as a catalyst for incorporating economic principles into the analysis of agricultural and resource decisions.
C-FARE matches expertise to public needs, serving as a conduit between academic research, extension, and national policy makers. Muhammad’s considerable experience includes leadership positions at USDA’s Economic Research Service, where he developed an extensive network of trade policy experts and forged solid working relationships with decision-makers in the public and private sectors. His research on global food demand has been widely cited and used in economic and global models used by USDA (the baseline GTAP model) and by the International Food Policy Research Institute (the IMPACT model).
Muhammad’s current research focuses on agricultural trade and trade policy, e ects of trade on developing countries, and global food demand.
“My desire is to continue the work of C-FARE by helping to improve the national presence of the profession, cultivating better relationships with policymakers and national leaders,
and improving upon our professional outreach by supporting programs that highlight the relevant and great work
by agricultural and applied economists throughout the nation and world,” says Muhammad. “I have de nitely bene tted from the work of C-FARE and look forward to serving on the board of directors.”
Muhammad joined the faculty of UTIA’s Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics earlier this year, where he assists the state and nation’s agricultural decision-makers in the evaluation of potential policies and programs dealing with agricultural commodities, food and international trade, as well as advocating for state and regional agricultural opportunities.
C-FARE is a nonpro t, nonpartisan organization with a governing board composed of prominent applied economists representing an array of public and private sector interests.
Muhammad’s appointment begins May 1, and he will serve a three-year term. E
