 ARE faculty members Karen DeLong (standing) and Andrew Muhammad (right, front) attended the spring meeting of the project HATCH S-1062: The Importance of U.S. Food and Agricultural Trade In a New Global Market Environment. This multistate HATCH project is composed of approximately  fty agricultural economists from universities across the country who specialize in international trade and policy. The team collaborates to write books, journal articles, grants and more. Karen DeLong was the 2017 president of the organization. ARE’s Edward Yu (not pictured) is also part of the project.
In Memoriam: Charles L. (Chuck) Cleland
Retired Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology professor Charles (Chuck) Cleland passed away on March 4, 2018, in Sykesville, Maryland. He retired from the department after thirty-nine years of service as a professor of rural sociology. He was a member of several honor societies, including Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta, among others. For  fteen years, he also served as a student ombudsman for the university.
He was educated in the public schools of Charleston, West Virginia. His collegiate education included Denison University, the University of Charleston (BA), Harvard University, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison (MS and PhD).
Charles Cleland had a distinguished military career, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1946-1948, where he was an instructor in aircraft armament.
