Dr. Becky Trout Fryxell (Medical and Veterinary Entomology) is seeking an undergraduate student for summer work on research projects associated with vector biology. The projects need assistance with mosquito and tick-borne diseases (field collection, identification, pathogen detection) as well as food safety issues (role of flies transmitting bacteria). 
What the Student is Expected to Learn: These projects will provide the student with field, laboratory, and analytical techniques. In the field, the student will learn collecting techniques such as proper trapping and storage methods. In the laboratory, the student will learn how to identify arthropods and conduct molecular procedures such as DNA extraction and PCR. The student will learn analytical skills by comparing prevalence rates among and between sites. Ultimately, the student will learn the importance of arthropods in zoonotic diseases and the role arthropods play in population decline.
Job Summary: The successful student will collect data; assist with implementing research projects; resolve problems arising with experiments; evaluate, analyze and interpret data; prepare reports; exercise independent judgment in performing activities; and conduct specific tasks include DNA extraction, PCR, and data entry. 
Primary ‘job’ related Functions: Assist with day-to-day operations of the medical and veterinary entomology lab. Assist with arthropod surveillance and identification – Field and laboratory work. Conduct pathogen detection procedures (ELISAs, DNA extractions, PCR, sequencing). Participate in the development of research procedures, equipment design, and construction.
Special Requirements: It would be beneficial if the student had an entomology course, but it is not necessary. Participation in field collections will be required and include travel to western Tennessee. General assistance with other studies and a pleasant team-attitude is required. The student must be willing to learn and conduct techniques as they are developed.
