Initial and General Considerations for Advising First Year Students

  • Be prepared for your meeting
    • Print a DARS and academic history beforehand
    • Check their academic standing status
  • Discuss Advising expectations
    • Discuss your prefered method of communication: email, phone, in person (drop in or appointment), etc.
    • Reference CASNR advising syllabus for communicating learning objectives and other expectations
  • Discuss Student's interest
    • Touch on things such as, "is this the correct major for them?"
    • Career aspirations
    • Internship oppotunities
    • UG Research opportunities
    • Honors (if appliciable)
    • Clubs and student organizations
  • Help with short and long term planning
    • Help them develop a 4 year plan
    • Explain to them how important planning is to their college career and especially important for the first year
  • Empowering the student
    • Encourage and teach them how to monitor their academic progress
    • Demonstrate how to use departmental websites, catalog, DARS, and other resources 
    • Teach them how to read their DARS
    • Communicate the expecataion that they bring their own DARS audit to your next advising meeting
