Our extension program connects the resources of the Food Science Department with Tennesseans by offering current, accurate, and research-based food science information. Our goal is to serve as a conduit to provide the best information and training for the food industry.
The focus areas of our program include:
Food safety is important for both large and small food manufacturers. We commonly hear about foodborne illness, outbreaks and recalls in the news. The University of Tennessee Food Science Extension Program is focused on providing the food industry with unbiased, research-based food safety education.
Assisting entrepreneurs is another mission of our extension program. Getting started in the food manufacturing business can be a very daunting task and in most instances entrepreneurs will need some help educating themselves on current state and federal food manufacturing regulations in addition to next steps. We like to assist Tennesseans as they explore the food manufacturing industry and provide them with timely information.
Food product testing and nutritional labeling
is another service that we can assist food manufacturers with here in the Department of Food Science. We can evaluate products to determine how they would be classified according to state and federal regulations, determine shelflife, and assist with development of a nutrition facts panel.Do you have questions?
