KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Celebrate the joy of spring with beautiful new additions for your garden. The University of Tennessee Gardens, Knoxville, will hold its annual Spring Spectacular Plant Sale on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The inventory for this sale is selected for ornamental appeal, plant hardiness and environmental adaptability. Many selections will not be found easily locally and may be new to the market. Shoppers should find true garden gems to add to their home landscape. Professional horticulture staff and Tennessee Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions and provide design advice.

The sale will feature an array of herbs, edibles, perennial and annual flowers, native plants, trees and shrubs. “We're most excited to be offering this year choice selections of three shrubs valued for non-stop blooming all summer and which are also the most dwarf-growing selections of their kind!” says Susan Hamilton, director of the UT Gardens. Hamilton adds that gardeners will love ‘Pugster’ butterfly bush, which only grows 2 feet high and wide and is great for decorative containers or the foreground of a bed. Also on sale will be ‘Blue Diddley’ vitex, also called chastetree, which grows in the 3-5 feet high and wide range and produces steel blue flower spikes. This plant is a butterfly magnet. The sale will also offer the super dwarf mountain hydrangea ‘Tiny Tuff-Stuff’, which grows just 2 feet high and wide. “Flowers are the beautiful lacecap-type and will be pink, lavender or blue depending upon your soil’s pH. This is one of the most durable hydrangeas you’ll find, reblooming all season, and tolerant of sun to part-shade,” Hamilton says.

A preview sale will be held on Friday, April 5, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. for all UT Gardens’ members, Gardens’ volunteers and UT employees. Garden members receive a 10 percent discount on all purchases. Memberships can be purchased on Friday at the sale with an immediate discount on plants.

Admission is free. All sale proceeds benefit UT Gardens, the official State Botanic Garden of Tennessee. A plant sale inventory is online, and this list may be updated periodically as new plants are confirmed available for the sale. Visit the UT Gardens website for more information.
