KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture recognized some of its top faculty, staff, researchers and Extension experts at UTIA’s annual Awards and Promotions Luncheon held on the UTIA campus in Knoxville August 2, 2019. Many of the awards are gifts made possible by past faculty, alumni and friends of the Institute.

UTIA Senior Vice President and Senior Vice Chancellor Tim Cross hosted the award winners and praised them for their work. “The faculty and staff of the UT Institute of Agriculture are known on campus and throughout the state as dedicated, hard-working and knowledgeable experts who provide real-life solutions to challenging issues every day,” said Cross. “The awards presented at this ceremony recognize excellence in research, education, Extension outreach as well as service programs that benefit our stakeholders. They serve as our way to express our gratitude for a job well done.”

Townsend is in her 24th year of service with UTIA, and got her start on the UTIA campus working in Mabel’s Cafeteria. She later transferred to Extension’s mail department, and then made her way to publications. She coordinates orders from 95 county offices and the three regional offices – along with requests from all UTIA departments. She handles calls from agents, specialists, and the public, and is praised for her focus on customers and her knowledge of past and present publications. Theresa trains new staff and students, and admirably served as interim supervisor when there was a need for a co-worker to be on medical leave. She and her husband have two children, and Theresa enjoys embroidery and photography.

“It is an honor to receive the Charles and Patricia Goan Excellence in Customer Service Award,” Townsend says. “I appreciate working at the Institute of Agriculture. I have had the opportunity to serve Extension Staff and constituents across the entire state and in every county. I enjoy when clients call looking for publications and I am able to assist them. I feel honored to be part of a great team and have been given many opportunities to grow and learn. The most rewarding part of my job is at the end of the day I look back on my day’s work and know I have truly made a difference in Tennessee.”

Through its mission of research, teaching and extension, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture touches lives and provides Real. Life. Solutions. ag.tennessee.edu.
