Security Awareness

UTIA Security Awareness header image

As a part of the Institute’s Security Awareness, Training, and Education program, monthly emails with tips and advice dealing with current IT security issues are sent to all UTIA employees. These emails help keep us all aware of security matters while also educating us on what to look for and how to report problems.

  • Don't Click; Don't Connect; Don't Reply
How many of us go to conferences or events and then get inundated with emails from vendors we met while at these conferences?
  • IT Security Policy Updates
As promised, I am trying to keep everyone informed of policy updates, so this month I would like to talk about two of those policies.
  • Updating NetReg
A while back, I told everyone about UTIA IT0304P - Network Registration Procedures. The procedures are for properly registering your Institute-owned IT assets so the Network Registration (NetReg) database would have the assets’ correct information.
  • Securely Returning to Work
We are about to enter Phase II of the return and I just want to be sure everything is secured before going straight back to the work network.
  • Communicating About IT Security
I have been giving a lot of thought as to how I may better communicate trending scams.
  • Beyond Phishing
During this unprecedented time of most everyone working remotely, I would like to refresh your memory of known attacks and add a couple more to look out for.
  • Securing the People Using the Data
When it comes to IT Security, we spend so much time talking about securing the assets and data, we don’t think about the people responsible for securing the data.
  • VPN Usage
A VPN Is used to extend a private network across a public network as a way to permit users to send and receive data across the public network.
  • Time to Review the AUP
As the year comes to an end, I want to remind everyone of our most comprehensive, thus important, IT security policy, the AUP.
  • Windows 7
On October 1, I sent a message about the impending Windows 7 end of support, but this message is one that bears repeating. Windows 7 is reaching its end of support on January 14, 2020.
  • Time for Training!
It’s that time of year again…time for security awareness training.
  • Departmental IT Security Audits
Audit and Compliance is visiting with departments to assess their knowledge of the IT security program.
