On October 1, I sent a message about the impending Windows 7 end of support, but this message is one that bears repeating. Windows 7 is reaching its end of support on January 14, 2020, and Microsoft will no longer provide any support, patches, or updates for the Windows 7 operating system (OS). This leaves any system running Windows 7 in a vulnerable state and cannot be allowed on the UT network.


The Institute currently has over 100 systems (that we know of) still running Windows 7. It is imperative that these computers be upgraded to Windows 10 before January 14. If you are using one or more of these systems, please contact the OIT HelpDesk by calling (865) 974-9900. Let them know you need an OS update and they will create a ticket for Desktop Support or your local/regional IT representative.


Now is the time to confirm your computer will run Windows 10. Please remember UTIA IT01xx – System and Services Acquisition Policy states that the Institute has implemented a refresh schedule of five years for replacing hardware. This is to ensure that our computers are under warranty and are capable of running the currently supported operating systems and applications.


If you are using a Windows 7 computer with specialized lab equipment and software, please work with your vendor as soon as possible to ensure they update their software to work with Windows 10. If your vendor says this is not possible due to the equipment, please email me so I may work with you. And please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
