Post-Conference Tours

Two post-conference tours are planned:


Tour 1 - Bioenergy Tour: 

  • Visit Wampler's Farm Sausage in Lenoir City, Tennessee to meet Mr. Ted Wampler, Jr. to discuss their sustainability projects, and meet Proton Power staff to learn about the syngas production facility that converts biomass into syngas (switchgrass to hydrogen in this case) with biochar as a co-product.   • Lunch is included in the registration fee.
  • Visit Genera Energy to tour the biomass processing research facility that prepares biomass for the end user, such as cellulosic ethanol or syngas production plants. Also learn of energy produciton co-products such as lignin, fiber and other compounds. http://generaenergy.com
  • Tour the Maryville College co-generation power plant that was installed as a demonstration project for the 1982 World's Fair, and has been in operation ever since. View a student video about this project at https://www.maryvillecollege.edu/admissions/visit/sustainability-tour
  • Airport dropoff by 4:00pm will be available for those with flights departing after 5:00pm.

Tour 2 - Urban and Campus Sustainability: 

  • Visit the River Management Center of Tennessee Valley Authority to learn how the utility manages power demands, while also managing river flows, hydroelectric power generation and reservoir levels for navigation, flood control, recreation and other objectives.
  • Knoxville Utilities Board will join us to discuss energy conservation and efficiency programs, and especially the assistance programs to upgrade homes of low- and limited-income residents.
  • Lunch at a favorite downtown restaurant is included in the registration fee.
  • Optional early departure will be provided after lunch, with transportation to the airport for those with departing flights after 2:30pm.
  • After lunch, travel by free public transportation to the University of Tennessee Campus to meet with University Sustainability Committee members to discuss and tour recent energy and sustainability projects, including the new University Center, residence halls, etc.
